New Monthly Series: Staff Picks It was no questio New Monthly Series: Staff PicksIt was no question to start this series with our Cellar Master, Dieter Duran, who has been with us for the past 11 years at The Ojai Vineyard. In short order, Dieter has become the master of the cellar. He brings his great work ethic and attention to detail to the intricate and detailed practices needed to achieve the clarity and expression that is at the center of Adam’s aesthetic. We asked Dieter what his favorite Ojai Vineyard wine was at the moment, and he picked our 2022 Special bottling Pinot Noir from our very own Fe Ciega Vineyard. Here is what he had to say about this bottling: “It’s a wine that you can enjoy now but also have the confidence that it will age nicely in bottle. I would buy at least a couple of bottles: taste some now, some within a few years, and cellar the rest. I love the little bit of new oak in there- not too much whole cluster- and it’s nice and fruity right now, with bright colors and a little bit of earthiness. I know that with a little bit of age, it will mature nicely.”

Way out at Puerta Del Mar, the ocean’s influence Way out at Puerta Del Mar, the ocean’s influence is unrelenting. Because of that, this vineyard always provides our most delicate and transparent Pinot Noir. For some folks that might make this wine appear shy against its peers, but no—this 2023 bottling is a Pinot that proves the massive appeal of delicacy. The wine is anything but shy—it’s super aromatic. A blast of fresh-cut strawberry gushes from the glass along with lilac, peaty river stones, cardamom, and Earl Grey. The breadth of aroma is impressive, but even more striking is how finely etched and discrete each facet is, like intricate filigree.Along with the knockout aroma, the textural experience is charming as it gets. From start to finish there is a fine tannic clench engaging the palate, which frames the deliciously supple, saline mid-palate that’s fused with red-fruited freshness. Spice and minerality abound, and the wine finishes with no hard edges. It’s elegant as can be and light-footed enough for seafood—perfect with grilled salmon or seared scallops.

It’s surrounded by other legendary vineyards that are likewise planted on the clay soils found in the seminal southern part of the appellation.‘Discípulo’ captures how Pinot Noir from this locale melds mouthwatering fruit and earthy, saline savor. That’s through using mostly Dijon clones (115 & 667), which bring more radiance to the wine compared to the more broody and muscular sister cuvee, ‘Devoto.’This 2023 bottling maintains an immaculate sense of balance while exploring a darker-hued intensity than we saw in the first two bottlings of Discípulo. It’s stacked with aromas of Chinese five-spice, fresh tarragon, hibiscus, and suede, and beneath there’s a sultry promise of the dark red fruit you’ll find on the palate. The fruit is both lusciously textured and bright, while a strong mineral backbone carries the wine into a finish marked by spicy persistence, supple salinity, and a fine frame of French oak.
In the heart of the famed “Pinot Bowl” of the In the heart of the famed “Pinot Bowl” of the Sta. Rita Hills lies Fe Ciega Vineyard, an organically farmed jewel surrounded by the region’s oldest, most legendary vineyards. Planted in 1998 on the clay-laden soils of the appellation’s southern corridor, Fe Ciega produces Pinot Noir with powerful vineyard character—intensely aromatic, earthy and exotic, yet featuring great depth of fruit. That fruity:earthy dichotomy is the heart of Fe Ciega’s essence, which inspired Adam to craft two distinct wines from the four clones planted at Fe Ciega. Thus was born this cuvee, ‘Devoto.’  Comprised primarily of Mt. Eden and Pommard clones, ‘Devoto’ is the more savory, muscular counterpart to its sister cuvée, ‘Discípulo.’ Whereas Discípulo leans toward satiny lifted fruit, Devoto draws from Fe Ciega’s wilder edge — spicy, structured, and brooding. Still, it maintains an immaculate sense of polish.
